Imphal, December 27:
Manipur along with other states and Union territories of the Indian Union, has been told by the Supreme Court of India to expedite full implementation of the targeted public distribution scheme and other public welfare schemes.
The Supreme Court which issued directives in this regard recently on a writ petition filed by the Peoples Union for Civil Liberties, PUCL, has given the states and Union territories a period of eight weeks to file a compliance report.
The state chief secretary, Rakesh, has also received a notification in this regard from the registrar of Supreme Court, Inder Pal, and official sources said work is in progress to compile a compliance report.
In its far-reaching order, the Supreme Court has directed state governments to complete the identification of BPL families under the targeted public distribution schemes, issues of cards and commencement of distribution of 25 kgs of grain per family per month latest by January 1, 2002.The apex court also set an identical deadline for states to complete identification of beneficiaries, issue of cards and distribution of grain under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Annapurna scheme.
States and Union territories have been directed by the apex court to implement the mid-day meal scheme by providing every child in every government and government assisted primary schools.
States were also told to make sure that there is an ICDS disbursement centre in every settlement.
